Looking over the field for this game you can see that it’s divided up into two camps, the Marine stronghold and the Terrorist town. The way the command tents set on the field it’s easy for either side to get to the town or the stronghold. The Marine base is designed as one big circle of cover, with tire barriers and buildings set as guard post to enter or exit the base. The Terrorist town is spread out along a much bigger area, with many buildings including two large structures (the Church and the Taco Hut) in the center which both have a second story perch that have a clear view of the whole field. I would say that the town has more overall cover, and the Marines base has a disadvantage in immediate cover around the base. This being said the field is still balanced in overall cover once you’re on the field.
Morning: The game started out with a huge rush to take as much ground as possible, the field is set in such a fashion that there is a great deal of cover for players, but there is also a great deal of cover for the opposing force that is very close by. This is true urban combat, where you can spend half a day fighting from building to building and only gain 20 feet of ground. Taking a building full of dug in paintballers is a tough nut to crack. The Marines took the west side of the town quickly but the Terrorist had a clear foothold on the rest of the town, which made it tough for the marines to keep the west side for an extended length of time. On the Marine base it was a clear stalemate, where both sides had 50% of the field with no easy way to break the other side.
The introduction of First Strike paintballs was a first in this game, allowing each side to have paintball snipers. The original intent of these rounds were to follow the COD game, where after you got so many kills (10) with these special rounds you could be in charge of the Mortar and reign down destruction on the opposing field. However this turned out to be moot, for there were never any mortar strikes given, that I seen. Being the general on the Terrorist side, I asked multiple times for a count of my sniper kills and never received a count, nor received any mortar strikes throughout the game. I do not believe that the Marines received any either, I know there were some building blown up but I do not have a count on whether it was due to a mortar or just a Demo player. Regardless of the absence of the mortar strikes it was still a fun concept with the first strike sniper kills. The other aspect of these was General kills; the general could only be counted as a kill if it was with a first strike round. I don’t have the total count but I know that there were at least 4-6 General kills for the Terrorist and 0 for the Marines.
Another aspect of the game that was new to Scenario play was the introduction of flags on the field, there were a total of 8 flags throughout the field, which they counted every 15 Minutes to see what color held that section of the field. This was a good way to make some points and show who truly dominated a portion of the field, these went back and forth throughout the day so I don’t think they were a clear game maker for either side.
By late morning the Terrorist side clearly had the field, completing all but a few missions and they had the Marines pushed to their base, There were a few alterations to even some things out at this time, they were allowed to re-spawn a few minutes early, and we were asked to push back to give them a chance to push out. This continued on till the lunch hour. During lunch Rowlf brought the generals together and asked if we would be willing to switch sides of the field to even things up. Both agreed and after lunch the game continued with the teams on the opposite side of the field.
The start after lunch went very similar to the morning; both sides took half the field and held their ground. However after playing for a while there was a thunder storm that rolled in and the game had to be called due to weather for a small break. The storm blew over after about 30 minutes, at this time the game resumed. You can guess what happened, the players came to a crash in the middle and everybody held their ground until the final gun was blown. I’m not sure how many missions were completed on the Marine side but on the Terrorist side we completed all the missions except 1. I know for our side helicopters were a key part of our strategy and got us into the game and kept us there once we moved sides. The lack of cover on the Marine side of the field was a hindrance, but not something that wasn’t able to be overcome by a strong line, and the helicopters moving people in.
The final battle:
Ok as in every other Scenario game out there, it always comes down to the final battle. The objective was clear and easy for everybody; there was a flag on top of the church, and the team whose color was flying at the end of the battle won. Standing on the line I can say that there was clearly a false start before the banger went off to start the run for the building, both sides would probably argue it was the other side that did it but I’ll leave it at that. It was a small start but it’s hard to truly say how the outcome would have happened without it, but hey these things happen. Overall it was a hard fought final battle, both sides dug in strong and fought hard to keep it. The only personal problem I have with an objective such as this one where you take a building is once one side has that building it is nearly impossible to dig them out. I much prefer a final battle where there are objectives to achieve and a team can work hard to achieve them and not have to depend on who has the fastest runners. Have an opportunity to make points for your side throughout the whole battle, and see which side has the most points at the end, and then give that team the victory and the whole points. This is just my opinion though, and in no way reflects that this was an unfair game or that the final battle wasn’t a total blast.
The final outcome went like this. Before lunch the Terrorist dominated the field, the total score wasn’t told. After lunch they said the Marines made up some ground and by the final battle the Terrorist were ahead by 90pts. The final battle was worth 100 pts and the Marines took the tower and won the day by 10 pts. This is a good game, any time it’s this close it means people had fun and that is all that matters in the end.
